Wethersfield Airfield Museum
The idea of a Wethersfield Airfield Museum grew from a discussion between the museum curator, who then was Police Chief Inspector Ross Stewart, and the MDP Chief Constable in 2015 The Chief Constable had received a letter from the widow of a USAAF veteran from the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing. Whose last wish was to have his ashes scattered on the airfield, yet she had been refused entry to the base in 2008 and 2012. The Chief Constable asked Ross to facilitate her visit, and to host other requests to visit by USAAF veterans and family. By 2016 this evolved into a six-room museum on the base, and by 2018, the museum had 600 visitors. In June 2022, the Defense Infrastructure organization told Ross that the museum had to leave RAF Wethersfield. The contents were put into storage, but volunteers kept the memories alive on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, delivering talks to local history groups and attended events, such as those held at RAF Duxford. In May 2024, new premises were found in nearby Finchingfield, and whilst currently only a single upstairs room, it is hoped to expand into an adjoining ground floor room for multi-media presentations and video.
